This depends on your toddler, some start to crawl when they are in fourth month while some can take 7 months to crawl. Now retractable gates are much better than pressure ones, but fall in between the lines of pressure and retractable gates when it comes to safety. Most are made of a polyester mesh type material and are pretty sturdy. The caution is that it can open with some applied force.

All of these are simple to install; the simplest is the pressure gate, however the hardware mounted comes with the kit and you can install it easily.

Now while you may not need it right away with a newborn baby, you should start now doing your research on which one you prefer so you can ready for when you do. You can find them in stores and you can even some very unique ones online as well. Online may be an easier tool when you are pressed for time.

Once you have made the decision to get the baby gates for stairs, keep in mind that you are a making a very safe and wise decision that will help you and your baby.
